Exceptionally fine and rare Southern Song black glazed Jizhou ware bowl with a white rim, from Jiangxi. This piece is very highly fired and the clay is of a porcelaneous quality. The near black body and white rim make for a stunning contrast as well as where the white glaze has “bled” a bit into the black portion giving one the impression of having subtle russet hare’s fur marks. Perfect condition with no damage and stable glaze (very often this is an issue with Jizhou wares, which tend to frit and flake). This piece was professionally cleaned prior to my acquisition which accounts for its pristine looking condition and I would not rule out the possibility of it being treated with a very thin coating of clear lacquer which seems to be de rigueur of Jizhou pieces currently coming onto the market.
