Good old restored Burmese Shan style temple offering box (Hsun-ok). This piece is circa 40 to 60 years old, with repair to the finial as well as some touch ups to the lacquer here and there. These are used during Buddhist festivals to put food in for temple monks, as a form of “merit making”, so the purchase of this piece is quite in keeping with its intention. Burmese lacquer ware has been in continuous commercial production for almost a century and is one of the most labor intensive handicrafts still ongoing and evolving in Southeast Asia. It is unfortunate that so many pieces now being sold on the internet are being given 19th and early 20 the century attributions when many are only are only 30 or 40 years old at most. I purchased this piece in Pagan in 2002, where I have been traveling since 1986, and is a fine oldish decorative example of this art. H: 53.5cm/21in and D: 33cm/13in. | |||||||||
