Fine and rare white stoneware mortar with a thick transparent glaze and decorated with knobs on the body in the emulation of a drum, from a northern kiln, circa Five Dynasties period (907CE – 960CE). This would have been used in conjunction with a pestle to grind herbs for Chinese Traditional Medicine. There is a single firing crack on the rim and a shallow body fracture in the cavetto that does not go all the way through. D: 14.5cm/6in and H: 5cm/2in. Please note that the actual color is much whiter and the glaze has a vitreous shine that the photos do not accurately capture, i.e., it looks much better in person than the photos show.
