Tang stoneware Zun

price: $1500.USD$11,000.HKD

description: Exceptionally rare and, quite possibly one of a kind Zun shaped vase. I am going to go out on a bit of limb with this piece and give it a late Tang to Five Dynasties dating (you may compare this to item #0325 which dates to the Sui, in the “sold” archives on my site). The nearest references I can find to this type of glaze are cups and alms bowls dating from the Sui to Tang Dynasties. The Zun shape has been around since the Shang Dynasty in bronze form and the earliest ceramic versions I have seen are proto celadons from the Spring and Autumn Period. This piece is very heavy for its size; the body was dipped in a white slip, and then fired at a high temperature with a semi opaque amber/olive colored glaze. There are still residue traces of the white slip inside the footrim and cavity but the outer footrim appears to have been wiped clean before firing. There is a hole in the center of the foot (not a TL test drilling BTW), which appears to have been made prior to firing, as there are traces of the white slip and the outer edge of it is has been pushed up (not unlike the rim of a crater impact- please see enlargement), having said this, a hole is still a hole, no matter how much I try to gloss it over, also there are 1.2cm & 4mm shallow chips under the mouth rim - both noted in enlargements. It has been suggested to me that this piece is from the Shou Zhou kiln in Anhui but I cannot find any references on this particular kiln. If anyone has any other opinion on this piece I would be happy to hear it. D: 12cm/4.8in and H: 12cm/4.8in.
