Xicun bowl

stock number: 1938

price: $2500.USD/$19,000.HKD

description: Exceptionally fine and rare “Yaozhou type” impressed bowl from the Xicun kiln, Guangdong, Northern Song Dynasty. The pattern is exquisitely composed of foliate scrolls, flowers and auspicious three babies. The Xicun kiln site was not discovered until 1953 and no mention of it was made in historical documents of the time. It is assumed after the Song Dynasty moved its capital from Kaifeng to Hangzhou, the Xicun Kiln which prior to that, produced export wares to Southeast Asia (present day Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia) ceased to exist as Quanzhou in Fujian became China’s principal port as well as being unable to compete with the more refined celadons from Zhejiang and Shaanxi on a domestic level. Xicun produced a large variety of glazes and forms which are mostly only represented by shards and fragments. Please see the last two enlargements for examples of this type. There are two tiny shallow chips on the mouthrim otherwise this piece is in perfect condition. D: 16cm/4.5in and H: 4.9cm/1.9in.
