Qing jade plaque
stock number: 1977
price: $900.USD/$6900.HKD
description:
Fine Xinjiang nephrite plaque circa late Ming to early Qing Dynasty. The motif of ocean waves, beneath a rock with an archaic Shang bronze vase containing flowers conveys the meaning of longevity, safety (stability) and prosperity. This type of jade with “milky” calcified inclusions is most commonly associated with the Yuan to Ming. The stone is quite robust and thick and the simpler style of carving is in keeping with Ming aesthetics, however the general interpretation of the symbols in the carving have distinct Qing characteristics, ergo possible Ming, but guaranteed early Qing. There are a few tiny “ant bites” on the edges and the staining on the surface seems to be just natural accumulation of “old dirt and oil” rather than an intentional “enhancement”. Please note in enlargements of the back, the traditional carving techniques employed at the time to hollow it out, also the white hardened residues are traces of an organic adhesive as this piece would have been the central jade ornament mounted in a wooden Ruyi scepter. L: 11.5cm/4.5in and W: 4.6cm/1.8in.
