Liao Dynasty bottle
Exceptionally fine and rare “soy brown” bottle with beautiful iron oxide almost “oil plash” patina. The potter was emulating Northern Song Ding wares in the shape and glaze, but basically I would describe this piece as being a generic Cizhou type. Similar pieces in this specific glaze with a wide footrim, have been found at the Mutou Yinnzishang Site, Shakenzi, Nei Mongol (Inner Mongolia) Southeast of Chifeng bordering Liaoning province, and are dated to Liao (907 CE -1125 CE)- see reference photo in last enlargement. There are a few bubble bursts pits on the surface. Aside from a possible retouch of a tiny exposed area of the stoneware body on the mouthrim (the only way to tell if this is restoration is to scrape at it with a sharp stainless steel blade), this piece is in perfect condition. Obviously for the specialist collector! H: 15cm/6in and D: 11.5cm/4.5in.
