Malipo Miao blanket
Extremely rare hemp fiber double layered plaid Miao textile with a silk and cotton thread banded central panel on one side. This is from the Malipo Miao ethnic group in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan bordering Vietnam. I am uncertain as to the function of this piece. I bought it as a “blanket” and it is composed of 4 panels on the back, where the two side panels are folded over as to accommodate a couple of poles (see last enlargement), quite possibly this was meant to be a “litter” type portable bed to be used in the field, but this is just a logical assumption on my part. I would date this piece 60 to 90 years old, it has a minor frayed corner but other than that, the condition is as excellent as one could expect from any old subtropical textile. It is heavy, weighing about 3kg/7lbs. Very few of these have made to the antique textile market (I have seen only three) due to their weight- as it is more cost effective to bring smaller decorative pieces out of the hills that will fetch more money. For more imformation on the hemp fiber textiles of this region I would suggest the reader “google” Robert C. Clarke’s paper “Confusion over Cannabis in Yunnan”. Obviously this piece is for the specialist collector or aficionado of minimalist antique textiles. The colors are well toned into pleasant pastels. Tough and hard wearing this piece may be used as a carpet as well as a wall hanging. L: 166cm/5.5ft and W: 127cm/4ft3in.
