Khmer lacquer box

stock number: 2076

price: $150.USD/$1100.HKD

description: Finely made Cambodian red and black lacquered oval box, this is post Khmer Rouge i.e. made after 1979 and would probably best described as Arts and Crafts for the tourist market, usually sold as “antique’ after being artificially stressed. Unfortunately for the exception of textiles most traditional Khmer crafts have died out, as the availability of cheap plastic replacements from China and the average Cambodian citizen would not be able to afford items like this. There is nothing I have been able to find written on the subject of Khmer lacquer except for a UNESCO publication on “Lacquerware in Asia” where I will quote an excerpt by An Sitha’s chapter on Khmer lacquerware “There is an urgent need in Cambodia today to revive and maintain the tradition of lacquer art and lacquerware techniques, otherwise these art forms will disappear entirely”. Anyway the craftsmanship on the construction of this is piece is as good, or even better than many old pieces. L: 28cm/11.5in, H: 13cm/5in and W: 16cm/6.2cm
