Palad Khik Amulet

stock number: 2127

price: $150.USD/$1100.HKD

description: Rare phallic charm from northern Thailand. This is the only one I have seen carved from an elephant’s tooth. Originally these were worn by men at the waist and were thought to protect the wearer from any harm to his penis and in a more general sense they also are believed to bring luck especially in terms of “wealth generating or protection”, so one might be kept in your cash box to increase your cash flow or a woman might keep one in her purse to prevent it being “snatched”. These have their origins in the Khmer culture who were predominantly Hindu (there is really a fine line in regards to this and it is often blurs into Buddhism), and their veneration of Shiva lingams. The ones that there are considered most efficacious are carved by prominent Buddhist monks who specialize in this art form. This piece has a worn and smooth surface and is difficult to date so lets call it 50 years (or so). Length: 6cm/2.3in and circumference: 7.5cm/3in.
