description: Beautiful section from a Chinese Neolithic jade Nephrite ritual implement. As it is incomplete it is difficult to be more definitive as to its original culture, suffice to say this piece is 4000 years old, i.e. circa 2000BCE. If you examine the facets on the edges this piece it appears to have been recut two or three times over the past few millennia as the cutting techniques differ on every side. Most likely the cut that goes through the hole is the only original cut. One side is carved with a very low relief series of raised bands that have a modernist look and may be worn as a pendant. Judging by the proportions on this piece I am guessing it represents a quarter to one sixth of the original artifact. There is a small amount of “cloudiness” near the surface on parts indicating the beginning of calcification; however the jade is quite translucent with some light russet toning at both ends. L: 7.2cm/2.9in and W: 3.5cm/1.4in
