Guest Book

Fine and rare 19th century, 2 paneled, ceremonial men’s “bell” cape (khing ta zhi) from the Southern Chin ethnic group in Burma- this piece would have been worn during religious and planting festivals. This is unique, in being woven with nettle fiber rather than cotton. The weaving is quite delicate and complicated; I put a single grain of rice to highlight the intricate and minute details of the blue and red alternating points. The bells come mainly from India and have a very sweet sound. There are three frays and a simple repair along the selvedge; given the age and rarity I would say it is in excellent condition. L: 76cm/30 and W: 34cm/13.2in.
