Rare are heavy potted three legged vessel with impressed chord pattern, from the first Chinese Dynasty. The Shang circa 1600 -1046 BCE, are acknowledged as the earliest Dynasty as they were the first group to keep a written record of themselves. This has a very thick wall and is high fired. A few minor chips on the rim but overall, in very good condition. Shang pottery is quite uncommon as you don’t see masses of items showing up in the market at once, compared to Majiayao, Qijia cul...

Very good small painted Majiayao Neolithic jar, Machang phase circa 2300BCE–2000 BCE). Finely potted, and high fired- this is only 1 mm thick at the mouthrim. The colors are fired on and are still vivid and crisp after 4000 thousand years. There is some acceptable damage (IMHO), please view enlargements and probable small repair on the mouth rim. This came from a longtime collector in Hong Kong, please note that the sticker on the bottom is from a shop that has been closed for over 20...

Lovely ancient pottery jar from the Majiayao Culture, Gansu and Qinghai Provinces. Most likely Banshan phase, circa 2500–2300 BCE. Given this is almost 4500 years old, it is in very good condition. There is one small chip on the mouth rim repaired with the original piece (noted) and minor touch up to the pigments on the lower bands. The surfaced has been burnished giving it a somewhat polished appearance. .H: 22cm/8.5in and D; 20cm/7.9in.

Celadon bowl from the Twante kiln, Burma/Myanmar, circa 1500CE. This piece is a “kiln waster” but is in good shape other than a firing crack along the side. The glaze is quite lovely with translucent and dark green pooling and drips at the bottom. The study of this kiln, is relatively recent, undertaken only within the past 20 years. Most examples of Burmese ceramics were found on the Thai side of the mountainous border in the Tak Hillside Burial sites. D: 13.4cm/5.3in and H: 7.8cm/3in....

Lovely Chinese Neolithic pottery jar with lugs and concentric circles design. This piece has some breakage on one lug and the motif is faded on one side but it still it has charm and presence- the design is very unusual and rarely seen on Chinese pottery. This Xindian culture from Gansu and Qinghai Province, circa 1500–1000 BCE. Worth noting: inside the foot are traces of carbonized roots. Aside from what I previously mentioned- in good condition. D: 14cm/5.5in and H: 13cm/5.1in.
Rare pottery jar with impressed chord pattern and lugs- please note the quirky applied decorative elements at the top of the piece. This is quite an unusual feature which I have never seen before. The Qijia culture existed in Gansu and Qinghai Provinces from 2200-1800BCE, (4000 year old =/-) and is considered one of earliest bronze making cultures. So a piece from this period represents the transition into the Bronze Age, from Neolithic in Chinese history. This jar is in perfect original c...

Large early Islamic Central Asian, Persian polychrome pottery bowl decorated with lively composition of animals - Circa 9/10th CE. Large repair (noted in last enlargements) and typical fritting. The red clay body was dipped in a white slip with decorative brown glaze- immersed in a final clear glaze to prevent the other colored glazes from running. The apparently random use of turquoise colored glaze is quite attractive. Fired at a moderate heat. D: 25.5cm/10in and H: 7cm/2.8in.

Stunning bronze sword handle from the Dian Kingdom that paralleled the Han Dynasty. Judging from the heavy triangular pommels and spikes near the blade, these were designed for close quarter combat that would look right at home in a fight scene out of Game of Thrones. This has a classic azurite patina with traces of the original iron blades. The Dian were a fierce and independent kingdom living in the vicinity of Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province which chronologically paralleled the Warr...
