Alabaster Shan Buddha circa 18th century. This has been left out in the sun and rain for the past 15years so the surface has begun to degrade (a good lesson in the Buddhist principle of Anicca ~ the impermanence of all things). The head has been reattached. The base is hollow- the only example I have ever seen with this. H: 27cm/10.6in and W: 11cm/4.2in.

Tibetan Buddhist “windhorse” wood printing block with loads of auspicious symbols (trigrams, dorjes etc) for printing small prayer flags or paper amulets- about 40 to 50 years old, still perfectly usable (I’ve thought of making cards with this but never got around to it). The “wind horse” has its origins the earlier Bon folk religion but has been incorporated to Tantric art for the past couple of hundred years. I’ve researched few of interpretations of this symbol, ...

Thai tiger amulet- in Thai culture the Tiger is regarded as one of the most powerful protective symbols. This one is carved from black coral with some gold leaf applied to the front and covered in lacquer to give it a pleasing appearance. Acquired in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand about 20 years ago, this is the only one I have ever seen. H: 6.5cm/2.5in and W: (at base) 4.2cm/1.7in.

Wonderfully carved wooden Lanna Tiger, the hole in the mouth means this could be worn as amulet or placed on an altar. On the bottom is a lightly incised spiral glyph underneath the base indicate this was meant to be protect the owner. Bear in mind that amulets are very popular in Thailand and most are mass produced in either as terra cotta tablet or cast in metal- this is a one of a kind piece. H: 7.5cm/3in and W: 4.8cm/1.9in.

Rare and unusual carved box in the shape of a tiger with bone inlay. This piece came out of Burma and is most likely from the Shan ethnic group. This was used as a container for ritual “magic wax”. Most Southeast Asian cultures have strong undercurrent of sorcery and shamanism regardless of their mainstream religions, i.e., Buddhism, Islam etc. I acquired this in Thailand about 20 years ago so I would guess this about 40 /60 years. The tiger invokes and imbues the owner with power ...

Very rare small sandstone head of the Mon Buddha, in “Royal Attire”, Mon/Tongoo culture Burma circa 1500 CE. An unusual and quirky piece I acquired in Mae Sai, Thailand, along the Burmese border, over 20 years ago. I bought a number of pieces.. since then I have never seen any again in Thailand or anywhere else. I was told they were dug up near Pegu (Bago) during a road construction project. The dating would coincide with the collapse and sacking of Pegu, in 1599, when it was...

Good Tang Dynasty gray clay brick/tile depicting “Atlas” type, Yakshi figure seated on a lotus blossom. I was in Taxila, (cradle of Gandharan Civilization) and saw a similar figure. This illustrates the Greco/Roman influence in Tang art. The lotus shows indicates an obvious Buddhist connection. The left side of the face is molded a bit obscure, but no damage. An unsual piece, in that it is smaller than the other ones I have had- ergo cheaper shipping. H: 16cm/6.2in and W: 10cm/4.1in...

Fine and rare, large copper repousse and chased copper plate depicting a religious scene or narrative. This was acquired in Sri Lanka in the 1990s, the vendor said this was showing the life of Buddha, but the iconography suggests it is most likely Hindu as the central image is shown facing the left, sitting on a tiger pelt, set against a foliate scroll background. This could be representing Shiva with his consort Parvati and son Ganesh. Superb workmanship, circa 19th century. Diame...
