Ayutthaya period circa Thai Buddha 16th CE small standing Buddha with rare “namaskara” mudra. The head broke from the neck (and subsequently repaired- see enlargements) off revealing a ceramic core and the most of the robe on the left side is missing. This piece will stand on its own but I do suggest that it be propped up or fixed onto something. H: 13.5cm/5.2in.

Alabaster Shan Buddha circa 18th century. This has been left out in the sun and rain for the past 10 years so the surface has begun to degrade (a good lesson in the Buddhist fundamental of Anicca: the impermanence of all things). The head has been reattached. The base is hollow: the only example I have ever seen with this. H: 27cm/10.6in and W: 11cm/4.2in.

Good circa 19th CE bronze Buddha from the Shan people in Burma. I found this in Mae Sai, along the Thai/Burmese border in 1998. The style is rather quirky but the face is typically Shan with Burmese gold and black lacquer. There are a few chips to the lacquer otherwise perfect condition. H: 14.7cm/5.9in and W: 5.7cm/2.3in.

This is an exceptionally rare Shan (aka Dai, Tai) altar figure carved from very heavy and tough iron wood, circa 19th CE. As with almost all the ethnic groups from this region in Southeast Asia, local animist and ancestor traditions coexist or are integrated with the predominantly Buddhist religion. This piece came from the Shan State, Burma and is H: 14.7cm5.8in.
