Fine strand of prewar WWII, glass Venetian trade beads from Africa, L: 58cm/23in. These are strung on a contemporary cotton green string with copper wire fastener. Include on this strand is large “faux” amber old Bakelite center bead attached on a secondary strand of African sand cast beads. The Venetians have shell (ostrich?) spacer disc beads.

Good strand of trade beads on copper wire consisting of Venetian millefiori, local sand cast glass beads, some ostrich shell discs and polished red stone beads. Total length is 39cm/15.5in. The Italian beads are pre 1940, the two beads towards the end have chips- the center elbow bead is quite nice possibly 19th century. Please view enlargements for scale.

Two etched bamboo section containers- these were used to hold cotton tufts and spindles- worn at a woman’s waist during the making of textiles. Beautifully carved with geometric designs and one has a strand Jacob’s Tears beads. Circa 1960 to 1970. Good pieces acquired about 20 years ago, cannot be found anymore. Rare antique large Thai “parang”, used to cut and split rattan and bamboo etc to create everything from baskets, village house walls to fish traps. The handle is made of old, and nowadays rare, Thai Rosewood: Dalbergia cochinchinensis. The cutting edge is still sharp and usable, there are a couple of splits which is secured by a metal band. Old (100 years or more) leather belt from Tibet with 5 damascened/niello (don’t know what this technique is called) but it appears to be a silver metal patterns on iron fittings with complete buckle. Women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This is one single panel which would have used to make three other skirts.
