Men’s loin cloth from the Northern Chin, Haka group Burma. Mantle of Merit: Barbara Fraser has a good write up on these, and has a couple of pieces dating to late 19th to early 20th century, she also writes these were rarely used after 1950 so I can date this piece to be pre 1950. The two end panels are different colors of which the lighter blue colored is original while the darker piece is looks to be slightly newer. Made from hand spun cotton with silk patterns. A few small holes, th...

Fine, old and rare Chang Naga, three paneled body “prestige” cloth with anthropomorphic cowry shell design. The cloth may have been woven by the Meitei of the Manipur State of India and used as a trade cloth to the Nagas. Made from very fine hand spun cotton weft and silk wapr, the cowry shells have a fine toned aged patina. This is a genuinely old cloth circa 50 to 70 years old (not for the tourist market). This kind of cloth signifies the owner has given a series of feasts or taken a head....

Unusual 3 paneled tufted blanket from the Rawang ethnic group in the Kachin State, Burma. The field is woven from nettle fiber with softer cotton tufts. This piece is circa 1950 (plus or minus), definitely old an old piece. The Rawang are an upland people living in some of the most remote areas of northernmost Burma. I acquired about 20 years ago in Mae Sai, Northern, Thailand, possibly brought down by the Rawang Christian Diaspora, fleeing persecution at the hands of the Burmese g...

Fine and rare 19th century, 2 paneled, ceremonial men’s “bell” cape (khing ta zhi) from the Southern Chin ethnic group in Burma- this piece would have been worn during religious and planting festivals. This is unique, in being woven with nettle fiber rather than cotton. The weaving is quite delicate and complicated; I put a single grain of rice to highlight the intricate and minute details of the blue and red alternating points. The bells come mainly from India and have a very sweet sound....

This foundation is woven from all and spun local cotton and silk floss thread.
