Quirky “Sai Sin” thread holder. Sai Sin chord is a type of religious blessing conferred on one usually after you have made a donation to a temple, by a monk. If you have ever been to Thailand and have seen people with bits of string tied around their wrist- this is what it’s about. This came from a Buddhist temple in Northern Thailand and is around 50 or 60 years old. L: 41cm/16in and W: 31cm/12in.

One of a kind quirky Thai pangolin amulet carved from bone with Khon script signifying this has some spiritual meaning. I have never seen one these before- possibly used as knife in symbolic blood letting rituals where the shaman cuts out “evil” from his patient. Probably about 30 year old this is a lovely abstract interpretation of a Scaly Anteater. L: 13cm/5.2in.

Alabaster Shan Buddha circa 18th century. This has been left out in the sun and rain for the past 10 years so the surface has begun to degrade (a good lesson in the Buddhist fundamental of Anicca: the impermanence of all things). The head has been reattached. The base is hollow: the only example I have ever seen with this. H: 27cm/10.6in and W: 11cm/4.2in.

Antique Chinese “lucky charm” with a bat holding a sign (almost like a Chinese pawn shop), the side in enlargement one means to have success getting a job in the civil service and the other side translates “Amitabha” Buddha. Civil service jobs were always highly desirable in old Chinese culture as they had prestige and power. This is circa Qing Dynasty and high quality silver with very detailed workmanship especially with stippling in the chasing. The silver is tarnished but will...

Rare meditation sitting rug, constructed with cotton warp and wool weft, this piece was most likely woven in Khotan, Xinjiang and dates at least to the middle 19th century. The wool pile is pretty much worn down to nothing except for the darker brown part that has a stylized “lotus” medallion in the center and border. I bought this the Barkor bazaar in Lhasa over 20 years ago and the side still has traces of felt where another wool border would have been sewn on in the trad...

Good small copper alloy Buddha from Japan, circa post WW II, 1950s. This probably was meant to be in a small portable shrine. The body was cast separate from the nimbus- there is a slight crimp on one side which may be noted as an irregular edge in enlargements. This was made in the typical Chinese Tang style, a good example of how Japan assimilated and refined foreign cultural influences. H: 9cm/3.5in.

Rare “Phra Ha Roi” (literally 500 Buddhas but in practice means a lot of tiny images) late Haripunchai, terra cotta votive fragment. This piece dates to the late period circa 12th-13th CE from the last remaining Mon city state in what is now Thailand that was eventually conquered and assimilated into the Northern Thai Lanna Kingdom. Worn surface- as to be expected from an excavated pottery object and comes with a museum quality Perspex stand. H: 10cm/4in x W: 10cm/4in.

Unique clear glass Sino Tibetan image of a Dakini, most likely cast from a mold. Basically even with the usual clay images it is problematic dating them as the molds may be old but the item recently made, this piece has traces of compacted soil, surface pitting and wear, as well as small Ming Dynasty Buddhist and Taoist clear glass charms having been documented, I feel a circa 100 year plus is a conservative dating. Having circumambulated the Jokhang on many occasions mainly to check out the B...

Bronze Khmer, Baphuon period style image of Ganseh,- contemporary. There has been some repair to the base. Authentic Khmer bronzes usually have ceramic cores with traces of stucco and earth inside the base. Having said this it is a credible reproduction with an "of the period" style and patina. H: 6.5cm/2.6in.
