Good circa 19th CE bronze Buddha from the Shan people in Burma. I found this in Mae Sai, along the Thai/Burmese border in 1998. The style is rather quirky but the face is typically Shan with Burmese gold and black lacquer. There are a few chips to the lacquer otherwise perfect condition. H: 14.7cm/5.9in and W: 5.7cm/2.3in.

Wonderfully ferocious mask of the Dharmapala Mahakala. This deity is one of the protectors of the Dharma (Buddhist law), but is mainly popular with Mongolian and Tibetan nomads because traditionally he is viewed as the protector of the yurt and tent. This was crafted from chased and repoussé steel alloy which is a much more difficult medium to work than softer copper. This dates to circa 19th century, with traces of pigments on the eyes and crevices around the mouth ears. There i...

Good monkey khik, carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in. Unlike the cast metal types, this is a one off item and good example of Thai folk art. Free shipping HK registered Airma...

Quite unusual are the “Sahnka” symbols, conch, rarely seen in carpets- this represents the sound of the Dharma-beckoning people to awaken from ignorance. Exc...

Rare Ningxia Tibetan Buddhist altar hanging rug. Dating is difficult on this piece due its near pristine condition, so conservatively I will say this pre 1960. The style, quality of weaving and colors indicate a much older piece (circa 19th century). W: 158cm/62in and L: 151cm/59in. This has classic Buddhist imagery- the central floral medallion represents the Buddhist Wheel of Law (Darmachakra)- 8 spokes symbolizing the Eightfold Path, next to it are a deer and trees which repre...

Late 19th century, large, Shan/Tai Yai Buddha. There is a crack on the shoulder and arm, a couple of chips on the base and minor loss to lacquer- but over all this has an ethereal expression, unique to Shan images. There is a dedication incised on the back, usually this name of individual who commissioned the making of it as act of Buddhist merit making. H: 80cm/33in and W: (at base) 23cm/9.2in.
