Exceptionally fine mid 20th CE wedding cover from the Zhuang ethnic group, Guzhou This piece is in perfect condition and is composed of silk floss on all handspun cotton using the supplementary weft embroidery technique. With the migration of rural young women moving to the “big city” to get factory jobs, this art has all but died out. Dimensions: 104cm/41in x 156cm/61in. I have 30 pieces from this area and this is by far the best.

Two bone “knives” from the Golden Triangle. I acquired these in Chiang Mai Thailand about 20 years ago and was told that were used by a “hill tribe”, for ritual ceremonies that involved the symbolic letting of blood to heal the patient. Men’s loin cloth from the Northern Chin, Haka group Burma. Mantle of Merit: Barbara Fraser has a good write up on these, and has a couple of pieces dating to late 19th to early 20th century, she also writes these were rarely used after 1950 so I can date this piece to be pre 1950. The two end panels are different colors of which the lighter blue colored is original while the darker piece is looks to be slightly newer. Made from hand spun cotton with silk patterns. A few small holes, th...

Fine, old and rare Chang Naga, three paneled body “prestige” cloth with anthropomorphic cowry shell design. The cloth may have been woven by the Meitei of the Manipur State of India and used as a trade cloth to the Nagas. Made from very fine hand spun cotton weft and silk wapr, the cowry shells have a fine toned aged patina. This is a genuinely old cloth circa 50 to 70 years old (not for the tourist market). This kind of cloth signifies the owner has given a series of feasts or taken a head....

Old Timorese hard wood statue commemorating a departed loved one. These were kept in the “attic” of a home and were not meant to be free standing. I bought this from an old Australian collection which was collected in the 1980s in West Timor, so this dates 1950’s to 1960s. This carved from hard wood in good condition with minor checks in the wood. H: 26/9.8in and W: 7cm/2.8in.

Rare hand woven from hand spun cotton, blanket from the Tlaing/Tariang ethinc group in Southern Laos, Sekong Province. I picked this up while travelling through there in the year 2000. Lovely muted colors. There are some interesting images woven into this piece, i.e., a helicopter, planes and scorpions and other abstract things, probably from memories of the Vietnam War. I washed it once but otherwise never used having been stored since I bought it. 160cm/63in x 96cm/37.8in.

Beautiful women’s skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, woven from fine handspun cotton using all natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is in perfect condition and dates to 1960 to 1970. The center panel is stitched loosely at the top as it was meant to be used as a pocket. Google Bahnar Bob Mc Kerrow to view photos of women wearing this kind of garmen...
