Tang dynasty brick impressed lotus, repurposed into a functioning ink stone. The ink grinding surface is a little rough but to me gives it a a naturalistic charm, like a lake in the mountains. The scale is enlargements.

This is a molded gray clay brick/tile from the Tang Dynasty, featuring an "Atlas" type Yakshi figure seated on a lotus blossom. I encountered a similar figure during my visit to Taxila, the cradle of the Gandharan Civilization, which highlights the Greco-Roman origins of Tang art. The lotus signifies a clear Buddhist connection. While the left side of the face is slightly obscured, there is no damage. This piece is unusual in that it is smaller than others I have owned...

Rare soy brown glazed stoneware vessel made in the shape of a grain silo. It reminds me a lot of a Jizhou glaze but this seems heavier and more stable.

Rare early “si zhi” (four straight lines) style inkstone carved from an old fired brick. The characters on the brick are in an archaic style, no longer in use today. The square shaped flat bottomed inkstone with sloping grinding surface did not become popular until the Song Dynasty, so it is possible this was made into a inkstone long after it was a brick. Chinese are very fond of creating ink stones out of “found objects” such as roof tiles etc...
