Good Cizhou type high fired, well balanced, ovoid soy glazed with russet highlights jar from a northern kiln, circa- Five Dynasties to Northern Song. There is a possible chip on the outer mouthrim (see enlargement)- difficult to tell if this happened after firing or before. There are remnants of kiln supports on the concave foot. H: 9.6cm/3.8in and D: 10.3cm/4in.

Early 20th century Tibetan saddle rug with traditional maroon colored border and backing. I bought this in Zhongdian (aka Shangri-la, Yunnan), over 20 years ago. Some worn areas (please note enlargements) and the sewn on border is coming loose, just needs to be resewn, but overall not bad. With border L: 140cm/55in x W: 75cm/29.5.

Tang Dynasty white pottery statue in the image of a Zhenmushou “earth spirit”. These are increasingly difficult to find these days. This has a powerful human face, and muscular body with wings bat like ears and cloven hooves. Repaired throughout- all the breaks are clean, please examine enlargements- small bit missing at the top of horn tip. H: 48cm/18.9in x W: 16cm/7in.

Large Han green glazed pottery hen with unusual spiral design on the wing- this is the only one I have seen with this, and has an Impressionist sculptural quality. The head has been broken off and glued back on. It wouldn’t be that difficult to fill it and match the colors. H: 18cm7.1in and W: 16cm/6.2in.

Tang dynasty brick impressed lotus, repurposed into a functioning ink stone. Although the lotus is represented in Han Dynasty secular art, this style of lotus is always associated with Buddhism, which would be more in common during the Tang. The ink grinding surface is a little rough but to me gives it a a naturalistic charm, like a lake in the mountains. The scale is enlargements.

A charming brushwasher in the shape of reclining scholar circa Ming/Qing Dynasty. Excellent condition- no cracks, chips etc. W: 10.4cm/4.2in and H: 10cm/4in. This has a primary cream colored base glaze with highlights in ocher and soy brown. A very rare little item. Please note that the smudges on the bottom of the piece were caused by the potter holding it with his fingers when dipping into the glaze.
