Two bone “knives” from the Golden Triangle. I acquired these in Chiang Mai Thailand about 20 years ago and was told that were used by a “hill tribe”, for ritual ceremonies that involved the symbolic letting of blood to heal the patient. Using bones in spiritual practices is a syncretic tradition in this region as the boundaries between Buddhism and the earlier Animist practices are blurred and seem to work in harmony with one another. These are old genuine old Shaman’s artif...

Quirky and eclectic collection of 35 small repousse auspicious good luck tokens.) These were collected in Dali, Yunnan, China in the late 1980s. No two are exactly alike and they seem to be influenced by Tantric Buddhism in that the endless knot, parasol, lotus throne, and temple banner motifs are represented in this lot as well as more traditional Chinese symbols such as bats and butterflies. In the last image I have shown a Qilin the only image in this group that has a hallmark. Sc...

Good Tang Dynasty gray clay brick/tile depicting “Atlas” type, Yakshi figure seated on a lotus blossom. I was in Taxila, (cradle of Gandharan Civilization) and saw a similar figure. This illustrates the Greco/Roman influence in Tang art. The lotus shows indicates an obvious Buddhist connection. The left side of the face is molded a bit obscure, but no damage. An unsual piece, in that it is smaller than the other ones I have had- ergo cheaper shipping. H: 16cm/6.2in and W: 10cm/4.1...

Very rare small sandstone head of the Buddha in “Royal Attire”, Mon/Tongoo culture Burma circa 15th CE. An unusual and quirky piece I acquired in Mae Sai, Thailand, along the Burmese border, over 20 years ago. I bought a number of pieces (all fragments) made of sandstone and limestone and this is the last Jambupati image I have left. Since then I have never seen any again in Thailand or anywhere else. I was told they were dug up near Pegu (Bago) during a road construction project....

Good monkey khik carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they, have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity or used by women to ward odd “evil men” and attract money. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in. Unlike the cast metal types, this is a one off item, hand car...

Complete set of five Shan esoteric Buddhist images. These consist of a Buddha, three monks and a chedi. These are covered with traditional gold and back lacquer and the bodies are made from compressed powdered herbs or temple incense ash. They have a quirky abstract quality to them, their facelessness represents that the individual is inconsequential but has the potential for becoming a Buddha, on the bottom are the eight Burmese zodiac symbols based on the days of the week. For some r...
