Fine and rare pair of “rice gods” carved from durable iron wood (Belian) from the Kayan people of Sarawak. These were kept in the rafter in rice storage containers as protective spirits to guard the harvested padi. Nice old matched male and female (mother father) pair circa late 19th to early 20th century. Orignally these were on the end of a long stick that was stuck in the rice, but these have been cut to make them appear more “sellable”. I acquired these in Sarawak a...

Late Qing Dynasty large “lock” charm. Incised on one side, are the usual characters of wealth, health and longevity and on the other side “together forever” is inscribed, which is uncharacteristically romantic and sentimental for Chinese charms wishing the owner for a long and happy relationship. This would make a great gift for a lover or spouse. Good condition with a couple of “flea bite” sized chips and naturally occurring inclusions. L: 9.5cm/3.7in, W: 6.1cm/2.4in and...

Rare and unusual Iban pottery pattern paddle carved from durable Iron Wood, circa 19th century. The pattern on this would be pressed into unfired clay pots to give it this design by the Iban people of Sarawak. This technique has been used since Neolithic times predating the pottery wheel, where pots were made by coiling “ropes” of clay into a shape and then using the paddle to press the coils together to make a shape. The edge is rough at the bottom of the handle other than that th...

Small bronze image of Annapurna; the Goddess of the hearth and food (as well a whacking big mountain named after her). She sits holding a ladle with which she feeds the world, with an unlimited amount of food. She is an incarnation of Parvati, the wife of Shiva. Annapurna symbolizes the divine aspect of nourishing care. This item is circa 17th/18th CE. Excellent patina, originally from Tamil Nadu. It has some tiny “casting” holes and tears on the base- please examine enlargements...

Elephants, tigers and snakes oh my! Very decorative hand woven cotton blanket from the Naga people in Burma. I bought this piece around 1997 up in Mae Sai along the Thai/Burmese border. This appears to be naturally dyed and the condition is excellent. W: 99cm/39in and L: 164cm/5.4ft

Circa Yuan to Ming Dynasty grayish white heat treated “Smokey jade”, nephrite jade with sinuous archaic Chilong carved on three sides. The hole is new and the ends have been reworked at a later date. As the faces of the Chilongs have been cut off on one end, I am assuming that this was originally longer and then cut to hide some chips or damage. As this carved on only three sides I think this was paper weight and may have been used in a Chinese Traditional Medicine Shop as a weig...

Rare, circa early 20th century carved wooden mask designed to be placed on or above a door to ward off evil spirits. This was probably made by a minority ethnic group such as the Miao or Tujia and is similar in style to Nuo masks although this was never meant to be worn. H: 33cm/13in and W: 24cm/9.4in. This is large impressive piece with a fierce demeanor.

Beautiful old Zhuang minority textile from Guangxi Zhuang/Guizhou province, China. Woven in two panels with silk embroidered “diamond and star” patterned border. There are small repairs noted in enlargement #4, minor fading on the left edge- all consistent with an old piece, some orange and brighter purple silk thread seem to be a later embellishment, indicating that this piece has been handed down several generations and highlights the well toned abrash of the original pattern....

Very fine bridal head cloth from the Red Yao (Kim Mien) ethnic group Yunnan, China or Vietnam. I acquired a few of these over the years but this the best one yet in terms of design and detailed embroidery work. These are heirloom pieces given by a mother to her daughter. This is made from all hand spun, and hand woven silk on cotton background using only natural dyes, particularly nice are the small, seemingly, random indigo highlights in the field. This piece dates from circa 1920...

Wonderful Tang tomb guardian “Zhen Mushou” head. This has an exceptionally fierce countenance guaranteed to ward off any evil spirits. This originally came from a very large piece but unfortunately this was the only part that could be repaired and salvaged. This would have been part of mythical beast sitting on it’s haunches with hooves; occasionally wings and a human face and placed in a tomb. This piece is made from terra cotta with traces of original black and white pigment....

Two bolts of P'ulo-thigma wool cloth. I bought these in the Bakor market outside the Jokang Temple in Lhasa in 1996. The one with the crosses is hand woven wool with some aniline dye. The crosses look to have been stamped on (dimensions: 18ft x 8.5in). The one with the circles is also handwoven wool, probably natural dye and the round medallions have been resist wax (tie dyed) on in the traditional fashion (dimensions: 16ft x 9.in). These are used as sashes, borders on carpets, chuba robes or se...

Very rare Qing Dynasty 18th century brush washer with Ge type and mottled off white glaze. The shape is quite unusual on this as it does not have a foot rim and has a slightly everted rim. There are a couple of blobs of extra glaze near the base that occurred while firing, otherwise good original condition. D: 12cm/4.8in and H 3.8cm/1.5in.
