Folk Buddha from Laos carved from hardwood possibly teak. The expression on his face is sublime. I usually don’t go into subjective hyperbole unless I really mean it. These were carved in rural Laotian communities as a devotional act, rather than to adorn temples or put on an altar. Anyway even with the obvious damage I think in terms of Ethnographic Art this piece is exceptionally fine. Late 19th CE, H: 46cm/18in and W: 15cm/5.9in.

Good West Timor men’s mantle using supplementary warp weaving decoration on the side panels and quirky embroidered fanciful animals in the center panel. This piece is late 20th century and is woven with homespun cotton thread. Except for the embroidered pattern the dyes appear to be natural. The colors on this piece are quite toned and mellow compared to what I have seen recently coming from that region...

Very rare and eclectic Yao ‘lingpai’ (literally a ‘decree/order tablet’) and it represents the traditional bamboo tablet (usually with a written demand or report) presented to the emperor in the past. It is used by many ethnic groups in Southern China as well as the Han. During ceremonies (be they Nuo, Yao or Taoist etc.), the priest stands in front of the altar with the ‘lingpai’ held in both hands in front of him and bows to the divinities while chanting incantations...

Good west Timor Atoni mantle for a man with quirky mythical four legged bird pattern. The two outside panels are made with commercial cotton thread while the center is composed of handspun cotton and indigo. I bought this from old Australian collection and was acquired in the 1980’s so I would date this piece circa 1950s to 1960’s. Good condition with a few pinholes and minor stains- no rips or tears. L: 170cm/67in (without fringe) and W: 115cm/45.5in.

Ensemble of 5 old wooden statues commemorating departed loved ones. These were kept in the “attic” of a home and were not meant to be free standing. I bought these from an old Australian collection which were collected in the 1980sin West Timor, so these date 1950’s to 1960s. The two largest figures have some age cracks on the back and the feet on the female figure are damaged, but all have nice patinas and are carved from hard but not particularly heavy woods...

Exceptionally large and finely preserved, 11 band etched carnelian cylinder bead from the Pyu culture circa 300 CE to 700 CE. Describing this as a “military” bead is fairly apocryphal but seems to be the widely accepted term in bead collecting circles, and are said to indicate some sort of rank...

Exceptionally fine and rare horse carpet from Tibet- circa late 19th- very early 20th CE. Very elegant blue and white pattern with floral medallions and scrolling borders with all hand spun wool warp and weft and mostly undyed pile. The colors are natural except a tiny amount of reddish pink and some abrash in the indigo as to be expected from an old village weave. No damage other some frayed threads along the selvedge. Elegant lobed Chinese quartz crystal “pendant”. As crystal is impossible to date scientifically, based on style I will estimate this piece is no later than Ming Dynasty and possibly as early as Tang Dynasty. Ceramics from the classic kilns in this shape were most common during the Song however, it was also found on Tang sancai wares and some Ming metal work...

Good Southern Song (1127 CE - 1279 CE)sea green celadon saucer with carved lotus pattern in high relief from the Zhejiang, Longquan kiln. There is one hairline crack that transverses the body (which disappears in the center) and comes out the other side, noted in enlargements as well some normal glaze cracalature. This is a shipwreck recovery piece which has been desalinated and cleaned, the under side has a mat texture but the upper side still retains much of its original “shine”...

Exquisitely carved pair red suanzhi wood panels with archaic scrolling dragon motif and key fret border. These probably date to the 1950s (possibly a little older or newer) - they just don’t do this kind of finely detailed work anymore. There is one old crack in the wood noted in enlargements and chips around the edges. Most likely from an old piece of furniture, L: 28cm/11in and W: 14cm/5.5in.

Impressive Han Dynasty terra cotta horse H: 64cm/25in and L: 41cm/16in. I bought this recently from an old dealer friend who is closing up shop in Macau and am currently having a custom made sturdy wooden packing box made for it before I send it to Hong Kong, (which is why the photos were taken still in the shop). The legs have been repaired but are all original. This piece was originally acquired in 1986 and the seller will provide supporting signed documentation attesting to this...

Very rare Chinese glass vase with molded Han Dynasty hunting scene, taotie mask handles and hobnail pattern. This was represented to me as Republic Period, 1912-1949 but I am not sure, as references in English regarding this genre is non existent (as far as I know). This is certainly an old piece, having lived in Hong Kong for over 25 years this is the only one I have ever seen, so I will date this circa 1950s -1960s...

Very fine etched authentic opalized fern wood bead from the Pyu culture, in what is now Burma who were loose group of Buddhist city states connected by the Irrawaddy River, circa 300 CE to 700 CE, strung with coral and Qing Dynasty cobalt blue glass beads. The ensemble is a contemporary creation but the value is in the highly prized pumtek bead. The Chin people of Burma collected these and believed them to have protective powers. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks, the hole has be...
