Collection of eight Dian Kingdom chalcedony “nipple beads” circa 400 BCE to 100 BCE. These button like ornaments were unique to this culture. These were used in decorating bronze buckles, funeral shrouds as well as clothing and strung as beads. The Dian were a fierce and independent kingdom living in the vicinity of Dianchi Lake in Yunnan Province which chronologically paralleled the Warring States and Han Dynasties, which was eventually annexed by the Han Emperor Wudi in 109 BCE. ...

Good old wool pangden cloth- all hand spun wool and mostly natural dyes (the pink is probably chemical) circa 40 to 50 years old. In the past these were worn by married women, but these days they are a fashion accoutrement for the modern Tibetan girl. This piece is in excellent condition with intact selvedges and no holes or tears. With the advent of machine made polyester textiles these are hardly being made any more. D: 71cm/28in and W: 71cm/28in.

Good circa late Republic to Early PROC, bell shaped inkstone with poem by the Tang Poet, Zhang Ji inscribed on the back. "The old moon is going down/ And the crows make a ruckus/ The world is covered with frost/ There are maples on the riverbank/ And the lights of fishing boats/ Drift with the current/ I fall into a sad sleep/ from the monastery on Cold Mountain/The sound of the bell/ Reaches the guest boat at midnight." Rare and unusual shallow bowls enclosed in pewter. The original blank dishes were imported from Japan and then decorated in Hong Kong. By the 1980s this trade died out due to rising property costs as well as the transitioning of the Hong Kong manufacturing sector to China. This pair is in excellent condition and perfectly matched with floral panels and medallions. These are also the only examples I have seen jacketed in pewter. D: 17cm/6.9in and H: 4cm/1.6in. Dated to 1970’s.

Quirky bronze pole end depicting a bull or ox’s head. This piece was sourced in Chengdu, Sichuan and seems to have a non Han aesthetic to it, so this was probably from either the Ba-Shu cultures which existed in the area, circa the Spring Autumn period or the Dian Culture which was centered in Yunnan but whose empire spread a far as to near present day Chengdu itself. As oxen played a significant role in Dian society as sacrificial animals as well a numerous bronze artifacts ha...

Rare Tang Dynasty jar with well executed Chinese calligraphy. This is a high fired near porcelaneous grey stoneware jar with a finely crackled greenish glaze on a thin white slip. The stepped lotus finial on the lid suggests a Buddhist connection as it resembles the top of a Chinese pagoda. Perhaps this was an offering vessel or a kind of “soul jar”. I don’t think that this was a bone ash jar as there is absolutely no residue of anything inside (clean as whistle- so to sp...
